Snow Dyeing - Finally

It finally snowed here , and my wonderful neighbor invited me over for a impromptu Playday. We had to jump at the chance, it does not snow very often where we live. We have been waiting for a couple of years to try it. We have been familiarizing ourselves with the Dyes the past couple of months, so all we had to do was scrounge up some containers. And Hurry and use some of this Snow before it disappeared before our very eyes.

I have had this panel in mind for some time, a perfect rustic piece from an old oil stove. The funny thing is while I was cutting out other parts, I was wondering what word to write on the panel, then I thought it would be great for a garden gate or fence ... so GROW.

And the funny thing is my fiber artist friend/neighbor made these Sun-print the day after I made this!!

Scroll about 5 pictures down and you will see her "GROW" print. Great minds think alike ! It must have something to do with the wonderful green country we live in.

Wow what a surprise when I got a call early this week, to fill in for a booth that canceled at the Fall Festival. I was on a waiting list but I didn't really think I would get the call . Yippee! I am getting ready.

The aftermath of making...

The timing was perfect, last weekend I was invited out to an old farm to gather treasure. Digging in old barn corners and finding little piles of tractor parts lost under the old hay, dust, and squirrelled away acorn piles. I found lots of inspirational handfuls and bucketfuls. It is always refreshing to my creative mind to get/gather "new" supplies. I never would have been able to whip up these new art pieces without this boost to my imagination (even if most of the stuff I used I already had laying around). Funny how this works out. Now I feel very happy with the progress I am making to fill out my booth for the Fall Festival.

Going to the Summit Festival Saturday, August 20th

I will be setting up bright and early, in the sweet little town of Summit. I will have my usually goodies, lots of rusty art.

This year I thought I would put some of my other art to good use. These are a collection of bags made from my favorite botanical gelatin prints, and a couple of my sun-printed fabrics, all the bags include parts of recycled pants and trims from old curtains.

It was a beautiful day at the Spring Garden Festival this year, this is quickly becoming a favorite show for me. What's not to love, being surrounded by luscious plants for the day, and many faithful returning customers. A very fast paced busy day, with just enough breaks to get a quick look around(buy a few plants), and peak into the Corvallis Art Center

Grandpa Kenny "Green"

Growing up we had a color called "Grandpa Kenny Green". OK, it is really just green . But when I was young my Grandpa Kenny bought a 50 gallon barrel of green paint at a surplus auction. I remember many of Grandpa's inventions being painted with that paint, many vehicles, tractors and other welded shop creations. Well recently he cleaned out his shop and gave me some scrap metal, including this old shop stove, which you guessed it, was painted with the infamous green paint.

Well I was thinking about just sending it to the scrap pile, but as you know if anything sits here for very long a bright idea will pop into my mind. I started wondering if that green paint would survive the cutting and grinding and welding process. If I cut big enough pieces it preserved some of the paint in the center, it is very chalky and rubs off on my gloves, but we will see....

After refilling the Oxygen cutting torch tank twice( it is small), and many days of practicing my cutting skills. This is the perfect kind of work that doesn't matter, to practice on. I finally have a big enough pile to start using.

Next hours....days of grinding and cleaning the edges.

I get to put the puzzle pieces back together. I used a giant stainless steel bowl for a form and start tacking the pieces together, easy to start with, and little trickier as the open spaces got smaller, I had to grind a few custom pieces to fit.

YEP!, Turned out just how I wanted it to. Thanks Grandpa for the old green stove.

I am gearing up for a Spring of Welding , These are some "piles" that inspire me, some of this stuff will never end up in a piece of art. But I just cant get rid of these things, they are so cool. They give me "ideas" even if they are left out of the final piece.

But this little face is destined to be used, he is so cute.

My Harlan Valley Quilters Challenge

Challenge fabric! So Juicy, It took me many months to finally decide what to make. I knew I wanted to use my new textile paints. I looked at many different ideas over the months; flowers, journals, or a 3-dimensional project. But I had a suspicion that one of my "challenge mates" was making some flowers( ha ha I was right!, click here to check it out)

Painting

So here is my Inspiration. I wanted to try out these 3-D houses, I had seen on this blog , and I already like "houses" see my rustic houses previously posted, Hmmmm with some photo transfers threw in the mix, my new textile paints, the great background fabric, and some other mixed media supplies (hand cut stamps, painted dryer sheets, Arizona ice tea can).

It was soooo fun to paint this whole cloth, I did lightly outline the freezer paper templates I had made for the house, so important parts of the painting would be placed properly

Construction

I left strips of the painting in between the cut out pieces to use later for the binding.

Here are the walls of the house.

Next I fused the pieces to the heaviest double-sided fusible interfacing I could find, I found Peltex

Next photo transfer with gel medium

Spread a thin layer of gel on the cutout photo, press onto the fabric and let dry.

After the gel drys you will peel and rub layers of the paper off, dampen rub, let dry, repeat, when it drys if it looks whiteish that means there are still paper fibers, rub some more. I use a old battery powered tooth brush to blast the last bits off ( don't go to crazy the transfer will start peeling)

Another tip for this transfer process is be aware it is transparent so you will see what is behind the picture. Also I always do some tests with different kind of printer paper and ink, if the kind you use first doesn't work try a different paper. I have to use a heavyweight matte presentation paper (Epson), with my printer.

Remember the strips I saved between the cutout walls, I fused them and trimmed to match up with the branch's on the walls. I did use a sheet of parchment to protect the iron and painting.

This is the inside with photo transfer, fused and reinforcement strips .

The window cut outs will allow the photos to be viewed.

Next the roofing -

I used a flour paste resist to crackle and paint the roof.

Love it!!!

I get to use my new wavy cutter for the roof edges.

Top stitched and thread painted the binding strips to blend the branches

This small travel iron worked great to fuse the last wall joint.

Glued the roof on with gel medium and a heavy book to keep tight while it drys.

Another crane with an different "face", I was in such a rut with the faces I make out of mower blade guards , I didn't end up using any this time around.

It is so cold and miserable and rainy right now I had to move my photo session into the shop( not that it is any warmer, just drier.) I think I should stick with Spring/ Summer shows for Welded Art. And stick to my Quilting in Winter, Brrrrrrrr.

I have been sneaking some Quilt projects into my Schedule, our Harlan Quilt Group has a challenge fabric this year I will reveal after our Holiday Luncheon. I have been taking pictures just can not post yet.

I have a set of Pool balls that I salvaged from a table my hubby was tearing apart. I have been dying to use them, and finally have got it down how to include them in my welded art. They bring such a great splash of color, to an otherwise mono-chromatic medium. I had to go back and add one to this long legged birdie. If you look back at an older post you will see him without his "ball".

I also had to make a new snail just to use a pool ball.

The Salmon run up the river just behind my studio, so it is always fun to make a new fish, this one has and hand forged antique hook on it's tail.

Well back outside tomorrow to brave the cold and finish up a couple of fern sketch's, and a mushroom sign. Then get finish packing for Friday and Saturday's show at OSU.

I just had to add a sneak peak of the challenge fabric, nobody can guess what this is.

I was going for a bird a little out of the ordinary with this guy, he is only a few feet tall. I have been trying to use some of these door knob I have had laying around , they present a bit of a challenge for welding, so I encased the main plate with some antique harness rings to avoid welding right on the plate.

The base on this bird is apparently from an antique jack stand? I am not sure what the beak/face is. Also the door knobs and key plate are oldies. And of course the good old standbys rake tines, pulley chains and various farm parts. I am pretty happy with how he turned out.

The Summit festival is on the 21st of August this year, it is loads of fun and this year my cousin is going to have a booth also,so it should be double the fun. This is where I first started showing some small artwork 10 years ago! Me and My Cousin and Aunt all shared a booth, now 10 years later I have to decide what to leave at home...it won't all fit. I am thinking of leaving two guys at home:

How to make a quilted leaf

First draw a leaf pattern on stabilizer, you can freehand or trace a real leaf. Sandwich this with batting (scraps can be used) and one leafy fabric. I use glue sticks to assemble this sandwich.

Next stitch around each leaf, this is just so you can see your traced lines after you add the next layer.

Go ahead and glue on another layer of your leaf fabric to the stabilizer. Stitch around your previous outline and add veining at this time.

At this point you should have a quilt sandwich that has fabric, batting, stabilizer, fabric and all the leaves outlined with stitches and veins. You can now cut these out.

If you want to add a picture as I did, rough cut it out and glue to one side of the leaf, then trim, leaving as much next to the edge of the leaf as possible.

You will then sew a couple of rounds of close zigzag or satin stitch along the edge. I have found that if I do one round then another it has better coverage of the edge.

Tip: if there is still white batting showing thru to the edges, get your colored sharpies out and fill in; nobody will ever know the difference!

Have fun make a bunch and let me know if you come up with any other tips.

Update on a House in Harlan, It is now in the hands of the curator of the Rust-Tex collection! That’s right I was juried in to the show; I had the privilege of being one of the 24 picked from among 118 awesome quilts. I was not nervous about entering the challenge until I was picked to send off my Quilt, then all kinds of thoughts run thru your mind, will they like it in person? will it get there in one piece, clean and dry? Ahhh the stress! Well UPS did delivered it in one piece, to Lois Jarvis last Friday, it was well received; she said it was even better in person that the pictures could show… whew what a relief.

Pieces of History - Family Trees

This rusted cloth was the first I ever, made with a cheap piece of cotton from Jo-Anns, it even had a hole in it , but I just wanted to try some rust-dying, so I used what I had on hand at the time.Well I have been trying to recreate this type of patterning on "good" fabric ever since, I have gotten some other cool prints but nothing similar. Lesson here don't use Junk when trying a new technique, because it might be the one you like the best.

I see a tree in this, a big old knarlly river willow, leanin' over the banks of the Big Elk River.

I have been hanging on to this for a couple of years trying to decide how to implement my vision, I played with some computer doodling when I first took these pictures; to get a better vision of my tree, and to see which side of the cloth I want to use. You always get design on both sides with rust-dyeing.

So every leaf will have a photo transfer from one of my family photos. I have had fun trying different transfers for all the leafs. I am thinking either hand stiching the tree outline with some heavy hand-dyed threads I bought a while back from Artfabrik , or machine "thread-sketching I have a few different sizes, some I can run throught my machine and some I can not. I think the heavier the thread the better it will help to define the tree, but I have never really handstiched anything.

I had the idea that I needed to mark or outline my cloth to get have a better visual, I have no non-perment marking tools at the moment, so what to do... Light bulb moment! freezer paper, iron on and hang on the window and draw all you want . I had a new idea should I cut out the tree and applique onto a different background fabric, or would I lose the effect of the whole cloth printing? More desicions...

Rust Quilt Entry

A House In Harlan

I have been making Rusted cloth for a couple of years now, and this "call for entry" came from Rust-Tex, the sponsors of the exhibit, a group of ladies that I know challenged each other to enter with some rust dyed cloth that we had created during a summer workshop,

This is the first Juried Show, I have ever entered (or any quilt show for that matter). I don't know how I will do, but it was no pressure, my Goal was to get them finished and entered which was a Big step for this procrastinator! I have about three other Rust Quilts in the works but I feel very good about finishing these and getting them entered .

This Quilt - A House in Harlan is a very personal quilt made with old family photos, from my Dad's Mothers Family, The pictures date from the 1930's.

As I prepare to help teach a Gelatin Printing Class at my local Quilt Group I enjoyed looking back through last years Botanical Prints, it is always so fun and I always go way over board with the printing and still have not made any journal quilts with the prints yet . I am trying to decide if a whole Art quilt needs to be pieced with the series of prints, or do I make individual quilts? Maybe that is why I haven't decided what to do with them, right know I will enjoy reviewing them

This Is What I Started With,

this will be the frame work,

This was all the stuff that was gathered from the customer & recipient's circle of friends. The piece was commissioned as a gift for her friend, everything has some kind of meaning to them. Example is the horseshoes are from someones pony and horse. So it was my challenge to put it all together into a work of Art! Everything had great Shape and Beauty, but somethings did test my skill and problem solving abilities, as there was various kinds of metal to incorporate that could not be welded, but it all came together as you will soon see.

The Base will be an old tractor wheel RUSTY and CRUSTY!!

I just had to get some pictures of this awesome rust, great texture. Alot of work cleaning it up, and I owe alot of thanks to Hubby for cleaning it up for me!

Getting started on the layout , I always have some kind of idea in my mind , getting it all to fit together is the key, arranging and rearranging,

One of the only requests was that the Initials were included and if possible be able to rotate

Getting ready for the Summit Festival

I have been super busy getting ready for the Summit Festival on Saturday the 15th, here in rural Oregon... It is held in Summit Oregon every summer for I don't know how long.

It is kinda a little "country fair" real laid back , with fun shows all day long,

The Summit festival is where I got started selling my Art in 2000. My Cousin and Aunt (also Artists) wanted to share a booth so that was it,we signed up and I haven't missed a year since. I have gotten quite a following at the festival, many return customers, So I try to have something "new" to bring every year.

We will see how the Mushrooms and Little RUSTic Houses go over !!! I will be taking pictures latter today and get them posted tonight.

To Hot to Weld

The thermometer on the back porch said 108`

I just received my order of Seta-color paints for Sun-Printing so perfect day for trying to master the technique, I think I got the hang of it.

I saturated my fabric with paint first, on a foam insulation board
then arranged my plant that had been semi-preflatened,
then took the whole thing out in the blazing Sun

It worked!!!!

Amazing How it draws the color out from under the item.

I am going to try more today ,

it is goin to be just as Hot and Sunny!

What inspires you to create?

here is what I come up with:

1. I think her mushrooms Inspired me to start in with the mushroom making!

2. Getting together with friends to "PLAY" and teach and learn from each other.

Perfectly in Place

A little house perfectly in place along with some Mushrooms, After making the flat cut out mushroom's I wanted to try some 3-D mushrooms! So here they are. The set was a Mothers Day present for Mom this year. Mom and Dad's Campground is my personal "Outdoor Sculpture Garden". I usually give Mom or Dad some kind of sculpture for a special occasion.

Giant "Crane"

One of the coolest compliments I have gotten recently is from a Lady that was looking at my Art at the Spring Garden Sale in Corvallis, She asked if I was a "Birder" or bird watcher, I said "not really" although I do watch birds all the time and love to spot them around here, But I have never kept a bird list. People in my family are always telling each other "I seen this bird or that bird".

She went on to say the reason she asked if I was a "birder" is that my bird sculptures had such a Bird kind of attitude to them although not realistic, very birdish. That was a cool thing for someone to notice!

Oh by the way Me and Hubby seen a pair of Bald Eagles the day we planted the garden!!Maybe I will try my hand at an Eagle???

"RUSTic" little houses

Another set I started was little Rustic Houses, they are small and fun to make, and embellish. I was trying to make some Wonky , but they all turned out pretty straight.

Ferns, Fiddleheads and Mushrooms

Here is a new idea I had this Spring,

Fern and Fiddlehead sketches,

I got a plasma cutter last year and haven't got to experiment much with it . So these are some of my first ideas , I didn't want to do "cookie cutter" cutouts. I wanted to stick with my style of Art so here are the first attempts at drawing with my plasma cutter (it is a electrical type of cutting torch). Hopefully my future attempts turn out as good. The pictures are not very impressive, I forgot to take them at home and had to take the pictures at the Sale , so the lighting is kinda bad.

But Good thing I took a couple of shots, because this one SOLD!!

The two pictures above are close ups of this one.

Here are the other two, another Fern w/Fiddleheads and a Mushroom Patch.
