Spring Making

Nature inspires art...I grew poppy flowers last year and became enchanted with the "Pod" shape.

So I decided to give them a try in metal.

Big rusty orb...each disk is about 4" across.

Some comical birds happen....kind of a tall pelican?

Others are elegant, cranes.

And some small cuties.

Spring!

The long winter is over, the First Festival of the year is coming up on Sunday, wheewww, where did the time go. I have been busy making new things, and learning new thing. Not all sculpture related, I usually focus on quilting during the cold wet months, and most of this Spring has been consumed with Dyeing fabric for future quilt projects

I also have been busy out in the metal shop....to busy to blog obviously.

This project has been on my mind for a while, it was a fun transition from quilting to metal it reminds me of a quilted feather design.

The fern cutout will become part of a garden bench, in the near future.

And of course I could not resist rust dyeing it.

It is such a great peice. Now to find the perfect use for it.

You all are welcome to come visit me Sunday at the Spring Garden Festival

Sunday May 4th 9-4

Fall Organizing

Fall is the perfect time of year, to clean up the aftermath(mess) of a busy summer of creating. It is my time to unwind and regroup and reorganize.

Sooner or late we all have to "get organized".

Trash to Treasure

Spring cleaning a few seasons too late. A busy Spring and Summer of making Art, has kept me busy making messes instead of cleaning up.

It is time to make a trip to the scrap metal yards, to seek out some useful metal parts. I need some boring basics like rebar, springs, shovels.

( ya gotta use what you have in the shop to make a list)

But I might also find some treasures I cannot live with out, on my wish list are old animal traps, old drill bits, gear rings and some squiggly things! If I find any I'll share a picture.

So going shopping means cleaning out junk or parts I will never use. I have a pretty good feel for what I can safely throw away after this many years. But there are something I have been hanging on to from the very start. When I start cleaning and filling the truck full of metal junk I have to keep reminding myself that basically I'm "trading" scrap metal for art supplies.

The fun part of this job is taking the cutting torch and separating the Trash from the Treasure

My favorite heavy hammer helps in the un-assembling of old farm equipment.

Can you find the Treasure among the Trash?
Tomorrow we are off to Cherry City Metals and Burchams to find more treasure. I'll let you know what I find :)
